Positioning for fintech startups

Position a fintech startup against how the buyer moves or tracks money today. That is often the bank, a spreadsheet, a processor or a person. Lead with the job and the risk you remove. Write a line for each person who must trust it. Put who holds the funds, and the control report you can show, next to the claim.

The approver can stop a deal the user wants

The person who does the work and the person who owns the risk often want different things. Dunford’s best-fit step asks who cares a lot about the value, and why. Write that for both. A line that excites the user and worries the approver stalls. The alternative is often the status quo. Her quickstart says to count the spreadsheet, the manual process and the decision to do nothing, not only the vendors you fear.

Steps

  1. Name the money job

Reconciliation, payouts, credit or a compliance check. One job.

  2. List what they do instead

The bank portal, a processor such as Stripe, a spreadsheet, an accountant, or no change.

  3. Separate user and approver

Each gets a line from the same position. Do not blend them into one vague sentence.

  4. State the missing capability

What you do that the alternative does not, then the result in their words.

  5. Put proof beside the claim

Who holds customer funds, and which report you can actually show.

What a SOC 2 report is

A SOC 2 report is an independent CPA examination of a service organization’s controls relevant to security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality or privacy. That is how the AICPA describes the engagement. Finance approvers often ask for it. The report can support a trust claim. It does not choose your category, and it does not say what the product does.

These lines are for a fictional product, Acme Payouts. They are not a client and not a result. The imagined product reconciles marketplace payouts. The alternative is a spreadsheet plus the bank portal. Say the third line only when it is true.

FAQs

Should the homepage lead with a bank partner or a license?

Only when that is why the best-fit buyer picks you. Otherwise it is proof next to the job, not the category.

Is “AI for finance” a category?

Only if your buyers shop and budget that way. Most are replacing a bank portal, a spreadsheet or a person.

Do we name Stripe or the bank?

In the positioning document, name the alternative you actually see in deals. On the homepage, name it when buyers already compare you to it.
